Is Into the Breach Still Worth Playing in 2024?
Where could games like witcher 3, skyrim, starfield, cyberpunk, dragon age and mass effect!? Could these be classified as WRPGs?
It depends a lot on how one defines WRPGs - my main characteristic being mainly PC-exclusivity, or at the very least PC-forward, meaning they should be developed to be mainly experienced on a PC - with a keyboard and mouse and everything that this entails: lots of dialogue options that lead to different reactions, several ways of solving quests including diplomacy and stealth-type approaches and of course, turn-based combat. The titles you mentioned wouldn't really make it into "my" definition of the Western RPG but they are clearly set aside from their Eastern counterparts through many more components, and my requirements are quite strict and obviously unpopular with the main bulk of RPG gamers out there. Ultimately it doesn't really matter in which category something fits as long as you're enjoying your time. And this is true for any media regardless of format.
I don't know you, I don't know why you are in my shorts. But seeing someone playing this old fantastic game, made me smile. Have an upvote and keep up the good work :)
I appreciate it. Am working on a deep dive video into KaM
@@StefaNonsense Oh, this will be good deep dive, looking forward to it :)
It's not about the number of times you fall, it's about the number of times you get up.

Bro, i remember playing metro the last light on my xbox 360, i love looting the dead bodies after killing them
Glad this sparked some nice memories
Nice! I only now see this podcast but I am sure it is top quality! Great work!
make sure to return with some thoughts after you listen to it
@@StefaNonsense while listening to it, I learned a lot about various games and franchises 🙂 good infos! Thank you!
There's another episode up if you want more
Sci-Fantasy yes
Does this work?
You need to be more specific
I completed this when I was 10 omg lol 🤯
Dope! On which platform? Thanks for watching!
@StefaNonsense Amiga 500 then the Sega Mega CD
Can I give feedback if you want your channel to grow? Or do you prefer to just do your thing, and allow whoever enjoyed to enjoy it? Cuz I was exited by the videos nice thumbnail and title. It's a cool topic. You had a good conversation. But maby the presentation was a little borring. I wish you had more energy. How can I be exited if you aren't? If you guys just wanna turn on the camera and talk then maby you could crank up your charisma. If you can't force yourself to do so then maby use this footage as a blueprint instead of posting it raw. Write it as a script to make it faster and more precise and read it out with energy. Maby add some more footage or music. Sorry if I'm rude and give opinions nobody asked for. But I really wanted to have fun with this video 👍
Thanks for the feedback. The rest of the videos on my channel are scripted and condensed, if you wanna check those out. The purpose of Game Chroniclers is the exact opposite of that and aimed more to be listened to than watched per se. Also, you can always increase speed to 1.25X if you want the information but it's not as engaging as you'd wish.
@@StefaNonsense thanks. I'll think of it more as a podcast and give it another go 👍
Drakensang is neat, but it has nothing on Enderal as far as European RPGs go.
First time I hear of it and quickly checking... it seems to be a Skyrim mod which explains why I've never heard of it. Thanks for watching!
Nice conversation, my fav remake is Turok 2, they just added few quality of Life improvements and better graphics, and that's it. Highly recommend it :)
Glad you listened and hopefully you got something useful out of it 😀
Make good games. Next to nobody cares how good they look if they’re trash.
Alas, if it were that simple. I have seen many people simply not even consider a videogame, especially an old(er) one, because of what it looks like. Human nature will human.
I hear the awesome soundtrack you are using 😉
Glad you recognized it, even if it is so quiet in the background. I made a massive deep dive into Drakensang if you're interested ua-cam.com/video/yXiEmlYJr1k/v-deo.html
I found this channel because Six Ages Review, and will buy the game today. Do you know Gnosia? I think you would really like it.
Glad to hear you're gonna get into Six Ages! I am not familiar with Gnosia, will look into it!
Makes for good listening while doing something else. Cheers! ;)
That is some of the best praise we can get, really! 😄
I kinda forgot about the remakes needed because the original publisher was a terrible creature that shoved GFW Live into everything. Red Faction Geurrilla ReMarstered was one of the big reasons why Embracer wasn't seen as a bad thing at first.

Imo, you should play the original, they cut puzzles, dialogue and also the death mechanic. The new content in dc really adds nothing relatively big in the main story and it feels a bit out of place. Also, the character portraits are a big turn off, at least for me. Still, they both add their own flare, the original has all the unchanged content but you might struggle with the low resolution graphics while the dc has more modern mechanics that might be more appealing to a new audience.
I played this as a kid and fairly recently. I enjoyed just as much now as I did then, though I think I had an easier time getting through the wits path as an adult. I absolutely made maps of the mazes. With older games there was an expectation that you would make notes. If you're interested in the story more than the gameplay, there is a comic book adaptation of Fate of Atlantis by Dark Horse. I'd love to see a remake of this game that keeps the puzzle elements, but beefs up the action.
Major tip: Spam the 'Bats Out Of Hell' Very Bad Thing. The game doesn't allow more than one bad thing at a time. Plus, Bats Out Of Hell actually make the Hell fate structures MORE efficient in punishment because who wants to live in a building covered in giant bat guano? Only downside (besides the need to continually select the bad thing) is it decreases efficiency of hell gates. Ever try it?
Haven't played it since making this video, unfortunately, but maybe someone else looking through the comments will try it. Thank you for checking the video out and commenting!😈😇
@@StefaNonsense Hope you pick it back up sometime - it's a fun game!
I am aware, that's why I made the video to begin with :) But if you look at my current output it's still in that realm of spotlighting classic PC games and have covered many more city builders since
@@StefaNonsense Cool! Ever since I discovered Fortune Builder on Colecovision, I fell in love with city building games.
Combat also actually got one important update, between SL and D2. Ability to pass action. At times you may not want to kill the last enemy, so you could use that time to heal up your units, in D1 it wasn't possible to pass. There's option to have all enemy teams bear a flag, so it's easier to spot them on map, as well as command Ctrl or Shift, which gives you safe path around encounters. Gaurdians can be defeated, you can use shades or medusas to paralyze them, but you have to boost their stats enough for them to survive, don't think you can actually raise initiative high enough. It still takes a lot of time. It is also possible to outheal them. You have a limited number of turns to kill them too, before you're auto retreated from battle. You can still reenter the city, and guardian will have less HP. Anyway glad you've covered this considering it's one of my favorite games of all times, and I do believe it still holds pretty well
Indeed and I do mention it from 7:48
I remember I was JRPG fan as a kid and hated any strategies. I just considered strategies to be shit. Then my parents bought me Discipiples 1 for Christmas, I faked happiness but I thought I was never going to play it. Then I launched it one day and.... I was gone for days! One of the best games I ever played, soo good!
Always nice to hear good memories about the titles I cover. I'm sure the turn-based nature of the combat and the manga-esque portraits helped to create a bridge with your preference for JRPGs 😀
Thank you comrade
You're welcome
I mean, a game with wyverns as units? Wonderful!
There's weirder stuff in it, especially as enemies
@@StefaNonsense Good, I like weird.
Loved this game. I eventually bought Fantasy General II but never got into it (maybe not their fault -- I barely tried it). I wonder if II was any good after all, but really what I want is to play the original again!
You can get it from GOG
Fantasy general is the best of General series. Thank you
Make manual video 💜
Let's see if your comment receives more upvotes 😄 Would be great to get my hands on a period physical manual tho, cause I could just print it out.
I just got the game and love survival mode so far. the mechanics are really nice, but I wish you could make enemies less difficult but keep the survival features
At a certain point, you'll get to know the system so well that most enemies don't feel as problematic, especially if you exploit things, which I suggest you don't.
A fair game, but even if I cheat and unlock EVERYTHING and play on lowest difficulty, I still find the last battle hard to win. And I got .. 110 hours of gameplay. Might say more about me, but the game shouldn't be that hard to win, if you have cheated everything and playing on lowest difficulty, even if you suck at the game.
RNGesus has been well-documented to be a dick 😃
Haha, the office quote cutins, like it.
Couldn't miss the chance
Wow that color pallet is fantastic, and I bet it came through looking good on a CRT.
Most likely!
I've actually never played this one
*gasp* It's always good to find out about stuff you either didn't know existed or never got around to play. The first Panzer General was released on Playstation as well, btw.
While pretty good, the Fantasy General couldn't compete with the Panzer General titles. What Panzer general has (besides the "modern look") - A much larger pool of scenarios - more varied missions (beach landings, sieges, open field maneuvers, to name a few) - very varied terrain (and weather!) with direct impact on the performance of the units and the strategies and tactics used (just try and attack an entrenched unit with proper suppressive fire or try to maneuver around and enemy strong point in marshy terrain or try to use bombers properly in rainy days) - a dazzling array of units (that can be upgraded as new and improved weapons make their way) - combined arms approach that allows for the player to lean towards a certain play style (for example: mass tanks or mass artillery with sprinkles of infantry and planes? or maybe a more balanced approach?). Even if someone likes to play massed tanks, there is quite some variability even then with light, medium, heavy tanks and tank destroyers all fulfilling a certain role. Even then, you still need at least some infantry for city or mountain fighting and some artillery for softening up hard targets). - units that gain experience and specific traits especially when amassing a high kill tally (like assaults specialists or tank hunters) making them very valuable and also making the player feel attached to them - Much bigger range of engagements (due to artillery and aircraft, and even warships) make the games more tactical and maneuvery. Also scouting is a thing that is not only useful when done right but even mandatory if you want to achieve some or the more difficult missions - The animations, vignettes in PG1 or the shooting and explosion ones in later titles, do indeed liven up the drab no movement sprites. - Also (hope I'm not misremembering) fuel management also matters in mechanized units tho' I can't remember if it was added in later games or was there from beginning (played most of the games 20 years or more ago ;) ) There may be a lot of the details that I forgot about those games, but man, you also brought back a lot of fond memories from those better and more simpler times. I remember in PG2 using in my army a unit of romanian mountain troops and a unit of IAR-80 fighters from the Barbarossa campaign in 1941 right up to the conquest of USA in 1946 where, even if they were quite outdated (especially the IAR's), due to the experience and traits gained along the way they still managed to surprise me a couple of times prevailing against enemies leagues ahead in tech and firepower. Ah, those were the times :))))) P.S.: I didn't know about Star General! How did that slip under the radar?
What I can suggest relating to Star General is that you definitely have to start by reading the manual 😅
What's the best 90s strategy game?
The one you prefer 😉
@@StefaNonsense I havent played many, this one looks great though!
The overall genre has many things to offer, ranging from the turn-based style to real time as well as different scopes and approaches. There's of course the Civilization series, Heroes of Might and Magic, Master of Orion series, the Warlords series and many more I'm skipping, not to mention the RTSs. So it depends a lot on each of our preferences 😃
Starcraft. By any metric.
I thought I already owned this game on GoG but it turns out I was thinking of Fantasy Kingdoms. Welp, time to buy another classic strategy game.
It's always good to rekindle the flame! Also, need to look up what Fantasy Kingdoms is 😁
What is the entire title of this Fantasy Kingdoms thing, can't seem to find it?
The turn limit really beat the crap out of me more than the enemy AI.
I feelya, same!
That’s been my experience with panzer general games. Because of the hard counters, small damage variability and limited turns, it often feels like I’m trying to solve a puzzle in the fewest turns possible instead of commanding armies in a simulated WW2 or fantasy battle.
That is usually the way of the retro. Same goes with the soon-upcoming "documentary" about Knight and Mercants I'm working on but there's something specific about these older games that makes me not annoyed by this... and that will be the subject for a future-er "gaming philosophy"-style video
A lot of these sort of games fall into that problem. Defense is simpler than offense, so the AI is almost always the defender while the player is expected to take the offensive role and "solve" the mostly static AI defense in a limited number of turns.
There's a sequel.
Watch the entire video!
@@StefaNonsense heh I have a bad habit of drive by commenting on videos that show up as thumbnails on my YT home page but that I did not watch.
Haven't played yet, but got it on gog give away. Will have to check it out...some day 😅 As always, so many games, so little time...
You can find Heroes 1 to 5 on GOG.

I have videos about all the Heroes from 2 to 5 btw 😉
Play the original. The "Directors Cut" version removes stuff.
For some, sure. Others will prefer the Director's Cut.
